NAIAS 2008: Audi TTS
It's been 10 years since the first Audi TT hit the streets, but the eagerly awaited, high-performance S version finally will make its debut next week at the Detroit auto show.
For power, Audi went to work on tweaking the 2.0T engine found in base TT models. By adding direct injection and raising the turbo's boost, Audi manages to wring out an impressive 272 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque from the inline-four. Best of all, peak torque is available between 2500 and 5000 rpm.
To handle the extra boost pressure, engineers beefed up the engine block, cylinder head, pistons, connecting roads and turbocharger.
The power propels the TTS from 0 to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds for the coupe and 5.6 seconds for the roadster.
In the United States, the only transmission available in the TTS will be an improved, quicker-shifting S tronic dual-clutch gearbox.
The TTS' handling is improved with Audi's adaptive magnetic dampening system, which is standard. Wide 18-inch wheels and tires keep the car planted, while 19-inch versions are available as an option.
Audi also adds a second sport level for the car's electronic stability system that enables the driver to perform controlled drifts.
Bringing everything to a halt are the TTS' high-performance brakes, with black-painted calipers and aggressive sport brake pads.
The interior features deeply bolstered sport seats covered with a combination of leather and Alcantara. A driver information display also includes a timer to record lap times for owners who make it to occasional track events.
The Audi TTS goes on sale in the United States at the end of November as a 2009 model. Base pricing
